Araceli’s Denver fashion picks: Common Era, uncommon style

by Araceli Lerma, Style Correspondent and Rianna Brown, Staff Photographer

Common Era is the boutique for distinctive personalities. It’s an experience for everyone that visits because they are surrounded by new trends in fashion without having to look too far. It’s guaranteed that you’ll see something you like the minute you step in the door.  They have new things coming in every day and they make their own jewelry and accessories.  Even more, they offer a wide array of do-it-yourself classes, like buttonmaking, feather jewelry, rings, card cases, hand sewing and more.  How cool is that?

Can you look chic and feel relaxed at the same time?  With this look you can…so much so that you might be tempted to recline and read a book. This stylish but casual dress subtly invites you to wear it. A piece like this magenta dress speaks for itself, and a great way to create a stir is to wear a single, unusual garment like this one.  The gathered, elastic-banded neckline feels comfortable because it adjusts to your body movement.  The warm color says “summer”!  Here’s a great great tip to accessorize with colors: don’t try to match everything; instead, choose one great dramatic piece like this oversized handbag to make it interesting.  The white offsets the magenta dress and the turquoise shoes. Try it!  You will see the difference!  But like everything, moderation is key.  The overzealous application of one or more ideas will destroy the effectiveness of the whole outfit.

The shoes are made out of suede with a copper leather wing window (so trendy!), and they are really comfortable. The polygon earrings have amber, brown and blue stones and a stone dangling in the center. The irregular shape makes the outfit look interesting.  Purple tag dress by Minuet $52, turquoise pumps by Seychelles $68, sunglasses $12, braided gold metallic-elastic headband $8, rings $10.00 each, cream purse with front bow $24, earrings $22.

This simple emerald dress enhances a small bust because the ruffles add volume and a playful touch. Highlight the strong color of the dress with an ivory sweater. The length of the dress is perfect: not too short and not too matronly. It’s refined and sophisticated yet moves with you. The knotted gold chain falls perfectly down to the neckline. The bow adds a dramatic look with the complementing purple in the burgundy satchel handbag with gold handle. The grounding clay color and openings in the shoe make structure sexy without looking boxy. To polish off the look, try these bangles.  Emerald dress by Lush $38, sweater by Red Berry $26, shoes by Seychelles $94, handbag $40, sunglasses $12, bow $12, necklace $28.

White sheath dress

Wear this pleated white sheath dress and a waistband tie for a sweet chic night out. The kimono sleeves are not intended to be off-the-shoulder but I wore the dress that way to be creative with it. The yellow headband makes it pop…same with the ring. The metallic clutch is luxe-looking and so trendy. The black peep toe shoes have cross-wise and diamond cutouts. These minor accents contribute to the lines and rhythms of the of the outfit as a whole. It says young and innocent, and if even if you’re not, let your dress say it for you. Dress by Luluvia $42, shoes by Seychelles $86, yellow rose headband $18, gold clutch $26, black earrings $10, ring $10.

Going to check this boutique out today. I’d wear every single outfit pictured above and sometimes that’s hard to say!

  2. I will start with the positive. The clothes in this store are great. Very different then anything else you find in Denver. The negative is that the employees are the least helpful human beings in the world! I am sorry, but it is true. Every time I have been in that store I have had to very rudely interrupt their conversations about the prior evenings festivities in order to be helped. I suppose you have to weigh the pros and cons. I will still shop there because the clothes are awesome, but now i know not have any expectations of being helped.

Chelsea, we thought your comment was important enough to get Common Era’s response, and here is what they said:

Chelsea, thank you for loving our clothes and prices so much that you’re still willing to shop at Common Era despite your
    grievance.

We pride ourselves with up to the minute trends that don’t break the bank and stock limited quantities to keep it fresh.
What saddens me is that your experience was not as positive as it should have been.

Everyone at Common Era wants nothing more than to help our customers feel beautiful and unique. We also know that many of them appreciate navigating the store without interference. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if the customer needs help or simply wants space. You could help us tremendously by letting us know, it’s never “rude to interrupt.”

So, next time you shop at our store, introduce yourself, tell us what your looking for. You’ll be surprised by how much we like to play ‘dress up’ and find that perfect something-something just for you.

Looking forward to meeting you again,
Debra and the staff at Common Era
